How to Grow Radish:
Growing delicious red radishes is surprisingly easy, even for beginner gardeners! Here’s a simple guide to get you started in Kolkata:
1. Best Time to Plant :
- Cool Season Crop: Radishes thrive in cooler weather. The ideal time to sow radish seed in Kolkata is during the late monsoon (August) through winter (September to January/February). Avoid planting in the peak summer heat, as it can cause radishes to bolt (flower prematurely) and become woody or bitter.
2. Location & Soil:
- Sunlight: Choose a spot that receives at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Partial shade can be tolerated, especially during warmer spells.
- Soil: Radishes need loose, well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. This allows the roots to expand freely and prevents them from becoming misshapen.
- Amend your soil with compost or well-rotted manure before planting.
- Avoid freshly manured soil.
- Ensure good drainage if planting in pots.
3. Sowing the Seeds:
- Direct Sowing: Radishes do best when sown directly into the garden bed or pots. They don’t transplant well.
- Depth: Plant radish seed about 0.5 inch (1-1.5 cm) deep.
- Spacing: Sow seeds 1-2 inches (2.5-5 cm) apart in rows that are about 6-12 inches (15-30 cm) apart. If broadcasting, aim for even distribution.
- Continuous Harvest: For a continuous supply, sow a small batch of seeds every 1-2 weeks.
4. Watering:
- Consistent Moisture: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Dry spells can lead to tough, hot-tasting radishes.
- Avoid Overwatering: Too much water can lead to excessive leaf growth and smaller roots.
5. Thinning:
- Crucial Step: Once seedlings emerge (usually within 3-10 days), thin them to 2-3 inches (5-7.5 cm) apart. This gives each radish root enough space to grow plump and round. Don’t skip this step! The thinned seedlings can be eaten as microgreens.
6. Care & Maintenance:
- Weeding: Keep the area around your radishes free of weeds, as they compete for nutrients and moisture.
- Fertilizing: If your soil is well-prepared with compost, additional fertilizer might not be necessary. If growth is slow, a light application of balanced liquid fertilizer can be given.
7. Harvesting:
- Quick Turnaround: Red radishes are incredibly fast-growing, often ready for harvest in 25-35 days from sowing!
- Check Size: Harvest when the roots are about 1 inch (2.5 cm) in diameter, or slightly larger depending on the variety.
- Don’t Wait Too Long: Harvest promptly, as overgrown radishes can become woody, pithy, and overly pungent. Gently pull them from the soil by the leaves.
Enjoy your homegrown, crisp red radish!
